The Government We Deserve

By KT

Had enough yet?

This post is, unfortunately, and maddeningly still true. More true than reality could ever seem to stretch when it was originally posted after the midterms in 2014.

And yet, here we are.

There’s much more to say, but for now, I’ll just leave this here.

For evil to flourish
it only requires good men
to do nothing. Simon Wiesenthal

Thank  God Bless the President of the United States on fb for the graphic
**Warning**rant ahead**

It’s taken a few days to  pull my thoughts together around what happened in last week’s election. When I saw this graphic on fb, I was inspired to just sit down and write it out.

The quote in the graphic, “bordering on sabotage” doesn’t really cut it for me. There’s no question that Republicans have overwhelmingly conspired to bring this presidency down, whatever the cost to the nation. No matter how many policy arguments or pundit perspectives to the contrary, the single goal of conservatives since the election of President Barack Hussein Obama has been to make sure his legacy would be one of ruin.

But excellence is the Obama legacy, the President’s true nature, and no matter the amount of slime heaped upon him by conservatives, this fact will stand the test of time. A slice of reality  that just pisses the right off even more.

The truth is we can whine all day, blaming corporate greed and the ignorance of podunk yahoos who vote against their own interests for the results of last week’s midterms. However, an equal, if not bigger problem are the self-righteous liberal pussies who stayed at home on election day, “boycotting” the only real weapon they have against the corporations they actually empower by sitting on their hands. The greedy bastards could give a damn about your rage. In fact, they count on it keeping you from the polls. I guess some folks won’t be happy until they do decide to vote only to find that their rights have been stripped by those they let glide into office with their silent protest.

If you’ve ever underestimated the power of the media, consider just a few short years ago, the hope and promise that sparked throughout the U S of A and worldwide, ringing from the mountaintops. What the boycotting, silent protesters are saying is that the President — who passed health care reform when no other president could, helped to level the playing field for women with equal pay legislation, enacted financial reform on Wall Street, brought us back from the brink of economic disaster, growing jobs at a a rate that dwarfs his predecessor, just to name a few achievements in the face of unprecedented obstruction —  this president’s policies are the reason the dream died for them?

I think not.

That dream was killed. Slaughtered by propaganda while we slept, letting ourselves be swept away in the roaring tide of bullshit that took over our national discourse. What John McCain and his irresponsible, unprincipled, downright sorry choice for a running mate began has been all downhill since for the common folk. I’m constantly amazed at the effectiveness of a strategy that I was sure was doomed to be seen for what it was. How could a majority so enlightened as to elect such an enlightened politician as Barack Obama — an oxymoron if ever there was one — still fall for the same old shell game over and over again?

The relentless attacks from empty, bought-and-paid for politicians, corporate-owned shills who wouldn’t know what was good for the average Joe if it bit them in the ass, is what thwarted the will of the people.

Any fool would know that the same thing that brought the electorate out in droves in 2008 and 2012, would have brought them out again last Tuesday. So, what did Democratic candidates do? Pretend they had never heard of Barack Obama. Alison Lundergen Grimes, who had a real chance of fulfilling my prediction of a Mitch McConnell defeat, couldn’t even answer the simple question of whether or not she voted for the President. It backfired, garnering fewer votes for her than the President in Kentucky. Oh, the irony.

Such was the strategy of Democrats across the board. And, across the board, they lost. The saddest part is that Dems had so much to run on, issues the average Joe could rally around. But instead they veered right of center and distanced themselves from the one star in the game.

Wonder what those scaredy-cat dems who worked so hard dialing for dollars and running from Obama’s hard-fought agenda, were saying on Wednesday morning. The gains made over these past five years are all in jeopardy now with the congressional takeover by conservatives. I wonder what mattered most to those losing candidates the day after? The error of their ways or how many of the dollars were left in their superPACs.

That right there is a whole, ‘nother issue.

to be continued …
