The Littlest Fallen Soldiers On The Front Lines Against The Almighty Gun
The Littlest Fallen Soldiers
On The Front Lines Against The Almighty Gun
By Katrina Taylor
At Sandy Hook Elementary School, 27-year old, Victoria Soto huddled around her class of 16 six and seven year olds as she heard the sounds of gunfire getting closer to her first-grade classroom. After rushing them into a storage closet, she waited.
No one yet knows why 20-year old Adam Lanza decided to storm a school full of children on December 14, 2012 with an assault rifle and 2 semi automatic pistols. It would have been an impossibility for Vicki Soto, her colleagues and the twenty little ones in their care to imagine as they tended to their daily tasks. They will never understand why their lives were cut short too soon.
Yet, when faced with life or death, Vicki didn’t think twice before placing herself between her kids and the gunman before he gunned her down in cold blood. Her fellow educators all stepped up to the call of duty to protect the little treasures in their charge. The selflessness of these brave public servants brings a new and necessary light to the true role of teachers in our national story.
Gun enthusiasts argue that it doesn’t matter that Adam Lanza had an assault rifle, in defense of a permanent end to the assault weapons ban. It’s true that none of us can say for sure whether or not having an assault weapon would have changed the tragic events of that day. I guess two semi-automatic weapons could’ve caused comparable carnage. But that’s not really the point. These are our children; our babies and if their precious lives aren’t held at the height of what we value, then who have we become?
When will the NRA’s insatiable quest to arm everyone to the teeth end? When we can no longer walk out our front doors for fear of some lunatic with a grudge to bare? I fear we’re not too far from that now. The boogeyman is among us, invisible until he attacks and then we’re surprised to see he was the guy next door.
The same folks who have been screaming about their 2nd amendment rights for the past four years now seem to be trying to turn us into a terrorist state. They love their “God & guns” but guns is where they’re choosing to put their faith, the rest of our safety be damned.
Gun and ammunition sales have skyrocketed since the first election of Barack Obama in 2008. I shuddered today at the local car shop getting my oil changed, listening to my misguided Southern neighbors whining about “them coming to take their guns away”. “Better load up, Jim. You won’t be able to get ‘em for much longer”.
Fact is, just after the 2008 election, ammunition did become hard to find, even for police departments. But that wasn’t because of any attempt by the Obama administration to take anyone’s guns away. The paranoid & fearful within the citizenry in their frenzied state stock-piled ammunition beyond our capacity to fulfill.
The NRA has never been more profitable than they are today.
Some say now’s not the time for this argument about gun control. But I say now is the perfect time. On top of the tens of thousands of shooting deaths that occur in cities spanning our borders each year, President Obama has comforted victims of four such tragedies since his election just four years ago. That’s got to be a record for a sitting President. Mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and communities across the U.S. have been scarred forever for no viable reason. Truly, what reason could there be? Even with mass shootings occurring in epidemic proportions, after the initial pain of these events faded over time, nothing ever changed.
I believe that this time the President will use this opening in the national discourse to actually get something done to prevent such unnecessary and unfortunate acts from happening again. With the rousing support of staunch gun control advocates like Mayor Michael Bloomberg & Mayors Against Illegal Guns, not to mention the majority of the electorate, the chance to change the current horrifying trend, I feel, is closer than ever.
The death of 20 innocent first-graders is a travesty that has touched people around the globe. It’s the kind of life-changing event that cracks open our hearts and forces us to face things too painful to look at otherwise. The things we hide in the deep recesses of our knowing. What happened in the city of Newtown, Connecticut has ripped through the veil of our ignorance, leaving a gaping hole where the light of truth reveals the shadows of irrational beliefs.
They were our babies gunned down like animals by a man who should have never had access to guns. Much less the choice of assault weapons Adam Lanza had at his disposal in his own home since his mother had been hoarding them for over two years, in preparation for the end of the world.
It’s a decision she wouldn’t live to regret being the first victim in her son’s murderous rampage that day as she tried to keep him from her arsenal.
The sacrifice of the 26 human beings who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School will not be in vain. It must not and, as always, it is up to We, The People to honor their lives by ensuring the sanctity of our collective future.
The NRA’s massive gun lobby has had its way with us for far too long. Forcing us to sacrifice our sense of well-being and forgo a general peace of mind so that some severely insecure people can feel safe. In spite of their tough reputation, the NRA squarely lost in their efforts to defeat President Obama in the last election cycle and that speaks louder than any crony money can buy. Just because they have the guns doesn’t mean they get to continue to get away with their bully tactics. What are they going to do? Shoot everybody?
There is real change in the air this time. These 20 little, precious casualties on the front lines of this old fight have paid the ultimate price. This is the point of no return. The attention of the nation is now laser-focused, hopeful for real solutions that will curb this terrifying & disturbing trend that could destroy any American life at any given time.
Our country is on a forward trajectory and this perverted interpretation of the 2nd amendment of our nation’s Constitution doesn’t fit in the paradigm that the majority has set in motion. We have been fighting to recover from the downhill course we were facing four years ago to rebuild our country with President Obama steering the ship towards that brighter horizon. It’s undeniable that the entire world looks to us with hopeful eyes, relentlessly trusting in the American Dream.
We’re not perfect, no doubt, but we remain the hope of many around the globe, a promise that speaks to the heart that no matter ones circumstances, anyone can make it if they keep pushing and never give up on the dream.
As President Obama aptly stated on this issue in his address at the vigil for victims today, “These tragedies must end and to end them we must change.”
We honor your sacrifice. May your spirits soar on the wings of angels
